The EES Coke Battery Plant, owned by DTE and located at 1400 Zug Island Road in Detroit, has released hazardous sulfur dioxide and other toxic pollutants into surrounding neighborhoods for decades, putting residents, workers, and students at serious risk.
The plant is still operating and produces coke by superheating coal for steelmaking – a process that generates dangerous airborne chemicals into the air. Since its opening in 1992, the plant has released these emissions into nearby communities. These years of exposure have placed thousands of Southwest Detroit and River Rouge residents and workers at a highly increased risk of cancer and other serious health conditions.
Corporate owner, DTE, has come under fire for violating the Clean Air Act in February 2026 and has been ordered to pay a $100 million penalty tied to its uncontrolled emissions. The company has also paid millions more to the surrounding community for its failure to prevent the dangers its pollution created.
Coke production releases a dangerous mixture of airborne toxins into the air. The process generates pollutants such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals. Many of these substances are known or suspected carcinogens and have been linked to cancer and other harm.
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is one of the toxic pollutants released during coke production, recognizable by its pungent acidic aroma. When inhaled over time, it can cause serious respiratory harm and may contribute to long-term health complications, including cancer.
Industrial facilities need to control emissions, comply with environmental regulations, and protect surrounding communities. When corporations fail to meet these obligations, they put the surrounding community in danger and should be held accountable.
Residents, workers, and students near the facility who have been diagnosed with cancer may be eligible for significant financial compensation.
